Did you know that bread and similar products such as crackers, rolls, chips, crisps, donuts, crusts, cereal, and popcorn offer little nutritional value for ducks and other birds?

In fact, bread is the equivalent of junk food for birds. It can cause obesity and other health issues in adult ducks and malnutrition in baby ducks.

While enjoying the lake and our wild fowl, try these alternatives.

  1. Uncooked steel-cut or rolled porridge oats

  2. Duck feed pellets available from farm supply stores

  3. Birdseed

  4. Frozen peas or corn kernels (defrosted first, but no need to cook)

  5. Mealworms are a high source of protein
